Jalapão
The Jalapão chair has its name borrowed from a region of Brazil characterized by the Cerrado biome (tropical savannah). There grows a particular species of Bromeliads that produce this unique naturally golden-toned straw, called “Capim dourado” (Syngonanthus nitens), which resembles precious metal. From September through November, and under a very strict regulation , licensed harvesting is allowed each year in the plantations, yielding the coveted raw material to the local artisan communities.
The idea of this chair is to preserve manual traditions that are disappearing, and to elevate the simple and natural. The conception of the piece required over eight months of research, constructing, and deconstructing of each component, until we found a good balance between aesthetics and comfort. The Jalapão chair is composed by hand-made golden straw discs stitched together by leather. The cushion is also made of several discs from certified sheep fur, each hand-sewn together providing maximum comfort with luxurious allure.
